The Classical Reception Studies Network was set up in 2004 as part of a project set up by Professor Lorna Hardwick, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. This book investigates the notion of a ‘democratic turn’, a perspective applied to the ways in which Greek and Roman ideas, texts, and images have been absorbed, reworked, and communicated in the wider world in the modern period and have attracted the interest of recent research.
The Review remains a valuable source for broad cultural issues in Reception, and would be even better if analysis of Reviews was to be accompanied by some serious research on theatre audience response, but it does not offer an unproblematic narrative or description of staging and performance.
